Script: Word of the Day

When introduced by the Toastmaster, please state the following:

“Mr./Madam Toastmaster, fellow Toastmasters, and guests.
In charge of "The Word of the Day", it is my responsibility to introduce an useful word or phrase to use in the meeting.

• For today’s meeting, the Word is ______________________________,
which means _____________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________.

[Display the Word of the Day at the front of the room.]
• An example of using the word is: _______________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________________________________.
• Each speaker is encouraged to use the Word of the Day.
• I will give the report when called upon and also report on other good and useful words and expressions participants used during the meeting.

Simple steps to remember on how to choose the word:

1. Pick a word that is in common usage.
**If you use an obscure word, you will not get much participation.

2. It should have more positive connotations than not.
**If you choose a word with negative meanings, people are not attracted to using it.

3. It can be widely used, which means adjectives and adverbs are best.
** A great Word of the Day is like a delicious dressing on a salad – it makes a wonderful speech even better!
